COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

RANDOM AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES

John was a member of the initial committee that was instrumental in successfully applying for and obtaining transportation services for seniors and individuals confined to a wheelchair in 12 communities in the Clarenville region. Presently, John is a member of the Random Age-Friendly Communities Board, holding the position of Finance Chair. He is a volunteer assistant with the CREST Bus.

Age-Friendly Business Committee

John is a member of the Age-Friendly Business Committee, where 30 local businesses have been designated as Age-Friendly.

The Clarenville Area Consumers Co-op was the first grocery store in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to be designated as an Age-Friendly Business.

An age-friendly business, like our community, is people friendly. It is inviting, accommodating, and accessible. The benefits of being age-friendly extend also to the greater community including:

• Parents with children in strollers
• Expectant mothers
• Individuals with disabilities
• Individuals with hearing and vision limitations
• Individuals with language issues.

Dementia-Friendly Communities

As a member of the Dementia-Friendly Communities Program, John is helping to make Clarenville and area more accessible to those living with the disease. Approximately, 30 businesses have been recognized for working towards becoming more dementia friendly. The Paint Shop is one of those businesses.
